Afrikaburn 2024

Are you thinking about joining a theme camp?

Do you want to actively participate in th
e creative process of dreaming and delivering a big gift?

If so, read on...

Find out more about who we are here.

What to know about State of Bliss at AfrikaBurn 2024

The Tankwa is a harsh and unforgiving environment. The beating sun. The vicious winds. The clawing cold. Are you cowboy/girl enough for this, cause if those sparkly boots and shiny hat are just for show, darling, I'm not sure we're gonna work out! Radical self-reliance is a nec
essity, one that can never be shrugged off by joining a camp unless you're going "plug-and-play", in which case, you've come to the wrong place. But, if you're down for getting dirty, knowing that it is through supreme dustiness that one finds ultimate sparkliness, then you'll find yourself right at home amongst our playful posse of magic makers.

Gettin dirty together, we maximise the participation potential of the international Burner community, of which we are a part. We work together to secure our base needs, such as water, shade, shelter, fire, a kitchen space, and showers, upon which we can then fling open the play chest and pour out all creative tools and toys to collectively engage in tremendous acts of creativity, participation and gift-giving.

Who are we looking for?

So in case you haven't worked it out by now, joining State of Bliss does not mean simply taking on chores in exchange for using shared resources. No, no, no. Instead, it means engaging yourself actively and with full gusto in a process of collective creativity. As a member of the project, you are expected to flex your creative muscles and dream-up, lead or actively participate in bringing key components of the co-creation to life. In other words, you are expected to sprinkle your special brand of fairy dust all over the place!

Particularly we are seeking a few existing groups of experienced Burners to join together. Groups within groups, layers within layers of participation. We do also have limited spaces for a few individuals to join up.

Oh and lastly, we love celebrating life and getting down when it comes to party time (we have the photos to prove it, we just can't post those here!), but, and its an important but, we want to bring together a group of people who know how to get down mindfully, and who respect the rest and refuge that we expect our camping space to offer us all as a balance to all the wild energy we get to express across Tankwa Town.

Our gifts for 2024

State of Bliss offers an almost constant flow of engaging activities in our space, with a busy all-day schedule of passive and interactive goings-on.

Mornings, we facilitate the activation of the body, being energised by a blissed-out morning routine, including our Juiced-Up Jams, where we serve freshly squeezed shots of zinging super juice to get the juices flowing.

Throughout the day, our space offers a variety of passive and actively facilitated activities for playful connection, self-exploration, and reflection.

The nighttime sees our space transformed into an immersive performance art experience. This takes the form of a late-night piano lounge and exotic tea bar running from 11 pm - 2 am, offering groups of golden ticket holders a comfortable refuge from the relentless doof-doof soundscape, and where a highly curated line-up of talented jazz and classical piano players and other instrumentalists evoke a space for deep listening and soul shifting. As camp members, we play a host of captivating, and richly costumed (can't ever understate the outfits!), roles, welcoming participants into a warm, comfortable, and safe space in which they may find surrender to the unfolding of greater processes at play.

Plug & Play

We are 100% non-profit and 100% NOT plug-and-play. We are a collaborative, co-created community that pools resources and shares responsibility. We are completely transparent with the finances; anyone can look at our budget and spend any time.

All camp members are expected to volunteer their time during the event for camp activities and roles (this is of course what the Burn is all about). These are all collaborative and fun-filled duties we undertake in the spirit of play.

You are not buying a service but simply contributing towards a share in common resources; it is your duty to get involved and help make our camp happen. If you see something that needs to be done, you're the person to do it! Although there are experienced camp members around to provide leadership and guidance, everyone is equally responsible for making things happen as they are.

There are ways for members to participate in building up the camp from anywhere in the world, designing, making, creating, scheming, dreaming... talk to us, we are here to co-create and turn your dreams into reality.

Camp members are expected to help set up and break down the camp.

Camp members are expected to contribute towards the financial expenses incurred to make the camp a reality.

Camp Resources

Your camp contribution is utilised for the provision of the following:

  • Water

  • Shade to camp under (you will need to organise and pitch your own tent)

  • Camping showers

  • Fully equipped communal "Backpacker" style kitchen with equipment and cooking apparatus to cook your own group or individual meal, and wash up afterwards (we have some lots of nifty suggestions)

  • Organic waste bin (the only communal waste bin in the camp, you need to plan for and deal with all the rest of your waste)

  • Group dining area

  • Electricity for charging devices, with a handy charging locker

  • Lighting

  • Public Theme Camp space as our gift to the rest of Tankwa Town from which we (that's to say you) dream up and offer a variety of engaging activities

  • Gifts to all the participants of Tankwa Town (juice shots, infused water, iced tea, music.... etc.)

  • Etc...(there is a mountain of other expenses that need to be covered)

Camping and tent arrangements
From a sustainability perspective, we believe that instead of international attendees bringing along a mattress and tent from the other side of the world, with limited packing space, or buying cheap, poorly made items when you get here, and then discarding them afterwards, instead, the camp can purchase high-quality tents and mattresses on your behalf and have them waiting for you to set-up yourself when you get to Tankwa Town. We've already started a small stockpile of high-quality, reliable, tents and mattresses for members to make use of, and we aim to grow this stockpile so that eventually, no campmates are required to buy new tents etc. Chat to us to find out more info about this option.

What is the expected financial contribution?

The below numbers look to be the structure of the financial contribution required from each camp member to float the budget. We generally do a tiered system to give everyone some motivation to make their contribution ASAP, as costs start to be incurred within the next month.

We work with a transparent budget that is open to the public to view.If you want to know more about the budget, please be in touch. To cover all the costs, the contribution structure is as follows:

  • ZAR 3000 - First 10 camp members before end of December - All spots taken

  • ZAR 4000 - First 10 camp members before end of January - All spots taken

  • ZAR 5000 - First 20 camp members before end of February - All spots taken

  • ZAR 7000 - First 10 camp members before end of March - Limited spots available (please email ambassadorssofbliss@gmail.com)

If you require financial assistance to join the camp, please be in touch, we have a few spots reserved for those with limited means. Installment arrangements can also be made by special request.
